BRITAIN: COMPARATIVE

Welsh Castles of Edward I

Master Jacques de Saint-Georges called to England from Savoie where he had built castles for Counts Philippe and Pierre de Savoie, most notably Saint-Georges-d'Espéranche between 1268 and 1275 (now destroyed, known from a plan of 1794).  Payments to him in the capacity of mason, engineer, master of the works and stone cutter at Conway, Flint, Harlech, Maumaris, Rhuddlan and Caernarvon, are recorded in the royal accounts (King's Works):
1281: at Flint, as chief mason, 2 sous per day (the highest wage of any workman on the job).
1284: as Master of the king's Works in Wales: 3 sous per day and 900 livres for works done at Conway.
1290: as Governor of the Castle of Harlech: 4 sous per day.
