ABBEY OF SAINT-FRONT (now Cathedral)
'Then,
after St-Léonard, in the
city of Périgueux, one
should visit the body of the blessed Fronto, bishop and confesssor, who
was ordained in Rome into the pontifical state by the blessed apostle
Peter, and sent with a certain priest named George to preach in this
city. Though they set out together, George died along the way and
was buried, and the blessed Fronto went back to the apostle and
announced the death of his companion. To him the blessed Peter
then gave his staff, saying, 'When you place this my staff upon the
body of your companion, speak thus, "For the sake of that charge which
you have accepted from the apostle, in the name of Christ, rise and
complete it." And thus it was done. By means of the staff
of the apostle, the blessed Fronto received back his companion from
death on the journey and converted the said city to Christ by his
preaching, and he won renown for his numerous miracles, and having died
there with dignity, he received burial in the basilica built in his
name, where, through God's bounty, numerous blessings are granted to
those who ask. It is said by some that he was even one of the
company of the disciples of Christ Himself. His tomb does not
resemble any other sepulchres of saints; indeed, it is constructed with
the greatest care, as a rotonda, like the Holy Sepulchre, and it
surpassed in the beauty of the workmanship all the tombs of other
saints. His holy feast day falls on the eighth day before the
Kalends of November [25 October].
